McClure's Pickles

  • 1899A Pickle Is Born


    Great Grand Momma Lala is born in 1899 and shows an interest in cooking early on. A friend introduces her to pickling and she makes a spicy pickle – at the request of her heat-loving husband – every summer until their daughter is old enough to lend a hand.
  • 1954Pickle Gets Passed Down


    In 1954 Jennifer Pearce is born in the suburbs of Detroit where she learns how to make the recipe from Lala. Together they make a more kid-friendly garlic dill.
  • 1973The Great Get Together
    Jenny marries Mike McClure in 1973, and Mike learns the ins and outs of the now secret recipes. Jenny and Mike make a point of making them each summer for friends and family. And they don’t stop asking for them.

  • 1978 & 1981Helping Hands
    Jenny and Mike get a few extra hands around the house with Bob, born in 1978 and Joe in 1981. It will be a few years until they can get their hands around the lid, but by now it’s safe to say it’s in their blood.

    The Brooklyn Bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. First over the bridge - 21 elephants in order to demonstrate its sturdiness to skeptics.

    In 1930 citizens of Detroit are free to travel to Canada on the US’ first underground country-to-country tunnel.

New York Events

  • 2003Business trippingJoe stays in Detroit and Bob takes the biz to Brooklyn in 2003. They shop around for specialty food stores to sell their specialty food product.

  • 2006Family businessThe brothers decide to make the family tradition the family business, and in 2006 McClure’s Pickles is born. They had no business background. They had no manufacturing experience. And they knew nothing about food production. But they were hungry.

  • 2009The best thing someone ever ateIn 2009 the brothers get a favorable review in the New York Times. One thing leads to another and they end up in a feature called The Best Thing I Ever Ate on The Food Network.

  • 2012Kind of a bigger dealIn 2012 McClure’s moves into a 20,000 sq. ft. factory in Detroit. Production expands to include relishes, kettle cooked chips and the coveted bloody mary mix.
